5th graders further explored the POP ART Movement by creating paintings of their favorite snacks in the style of Pop Artist Burton Morris. Students began these paintings with observational drawings of their snack items and transformed them into Burton Morris' style by adding energy shards, bright colorful backgrounds and black outlines. I am very proud of the work created by the 5th graders at Willets Road.

This summer the Memory Project portraits created by Junior and Senior artists at JFK HS in Bellmore, NY were delivered to the children in Haiti. Check out their reactions to receiving their beautiful gifts in the video below as well as the photos of the children with the portraits that were made for them. Haiti 2014 from Ben Schumaker on Vimeo. I am excited to announce that this year, our students in AP Art and Drawing & Painting are participating in The Memory Project. Through The Memory Project, a non profit organization, art students create portraits for youth around the world who've been neglected, orphaned, or disadvantaged. It allows our students to use their talents to connect with other children through their art. This year our students created portraits of children from Haiti. Many of our students felt connected to the children they were drawing and worked so hard at completing these beautiful portraits so that the child they were drawing felt special and proud of their gift. It has been such a rewarding experience to share and involve my students with and we look forward to participating again. The portraits are scheduled to be sent to Haiti in June. Pictures and/or video of their delivery will be shared as soon as we receive notice. Trying to save up for College? Need a little extra money for Art Supplies?
